Leather LARP armour for the Middle Ages or fantasy

A LARP leather armor for medieval or fantasyLeather armour is the non-plus-ultra for many a LARP when it comes to authenticity and protection. Leather armour and leather equipment is a popular and proven form of armour in both fantasy and medieval settings. Of course, leather armour is not so suitable for fighting a knight in full iron armour.

But how often do you come up against such an opponent? If he's not on horseback, his heavy armour actually puts him at a clear disadvantage. In leather armour you are as nimble as you are agile. The leather armour protects you perfectly against quick blows and thrusts.

Armour made of metal, leather or an effective mix of materials

Armor made of metal, leather or an effective mix of materialsHistorically, only a few pieces of leather armour have survived from the Middle Ages. Pure leather armour may have been the exception in the Middle Ages, but a mixture of leather and metal was certainly in use. Vikings liked to protect themselves with heavy leather plates, leather bracers and similar greaves. In general, the Vikings were extremely inventive when it came to armour in the first centuries of their campaigns in the early Middle Ages. They wore captured shields, chain mail and helmets, which were wildly mixed with armour made of leather or other materials.

In the Viking Middle Ages, the element of surprise during an attack was more important for victory than a long-planned battle. The brigantines became important later, but they are as well a typical example of the mix of materials. Many metal plates were covered with fabric, silk or leather in brown or black and joined together with rivets. Mobility was the key feature of this type of armour, always combined with a certain degree of protection. This type of combat became increasingly important in the high and late Middle Ages, as the number of fighters grew steadily.

The knights formed a closed troop. They were the phalanx, while the lansquenets and commoners fought in the thick of the battle. They were only able to protect themselves with their hard-won makeshift armour. They were glad of any protection. This could be a gambeson or partial armour made of leather, such as shoulder armour.

In fantasy, however, there are other reasons to wear leather as armour. The dark elves have no rules. But real elves as warriors, rangers, scouts or messengers stay away from metal. For these fighters, other armour is much more beneficial, such as the leather bonnet, leather bracers and greaves or a leather jerkin.

Elves thrive on their stealth and mobility, especially in the forest. The same naturally applies to assassins, thieves and mages. Cloaking, deceiving, striking and escaping quickly is only possible with brown or black leather armour. A leather mask or a leather helmet goes well with it. Metal already gives itself away with its sound, and it also flashes and reflects. Dark elves therefore use black or brown coloured steel.

But if lightness and speed are important, leather armour is the right choice. The same applies to the female warrior. She can and will also fight in armour as a shieldmaiden, clan leader, elf or amazon. But here the advantage lies not only in bravery, but above all in speed. And in the Middle Ages or in fantasy, this is only possible with leather armour.
