Get a LARP tunic in black, green or brown for LARP eventsThe Middle Ages Tunic

From ancient times to the late Middle Ages, the tunic was the all-dominant garment. In Rome, people wore the tunic and in Athens the similar chiton as comfortable undergarments. In the Middle Ages, the tunic evolved into the universal outer garment worn over the shirt. The slow progress of culture and fabric processing in the Middle Ages can be well seen in the development of the tunic. Originally, the Greek and Roman form consisted of two cloths made of linen or wool, which were sewn together first on one side of the body and later on both sides.

In this case, the back part was kept longer and one shoulder remained uncovered. If only one side was sewn, the tunic was closed with a brooch. This was quite stylish, which can still be seen on old statues. When it got cold, ladies and gentlemen wore a more tightly woven coat cloth over the tunic.

The development of the tunic in the Middle Ages

Larp tunic in the Middle Ages in black, green or brownIn the early Middle Ages there was little thought of style or cultural specificity in garb. Most people had to live with simple and coarse fabrics in natural colors. The manufacture and cuts of tunics had spread throughout Europe after the Romans. The Normans and Vikings, the Germanic tribes, the Rus, the Turkic peoples up to the Arabs in Spain - they all wore tunics. Initially, the cuts of this garb were very simple and differed at most regionally. Earth colors, brown and only rarely black occurred. We know very little about it today, because hardly anything of these fabrics has survived except in sites like Thorsberg. But with the development of the nobility and their wealth, clothing also began to develop. It was described in type and style then also in some records. Those who had money as princes or went on raids as Vikings could afford splendid colors, noble belts and elaborate patterns. Thus, in the Middle Ages, the forms of tunics also began to develop in many ways. So different colors, borders, ornaments and hoods emerged. Then they developed short- or long-sleeved variants and fabrics such as hemp, linen or silk from Asia. Fashion took hold with short tunics for combat or tunics as undergarments. The tunics of the peasants and the warriors had to remain shorter, so as not to interfere with work or battle.

For this purpose, the peasants were natural colors from gray to brown. That was prescribed by law. The pieces reaching to the ground were rather reserved for the noblemen, royal lords and the ecclesiastical dignitaries. The Vikings probably used short tunics with warming leg warmers or pants underneath.
